They promote more effective foot function and so improve your quality of life.

       Foot malfunction can result in chronic and acute pain

It will be necessary to under-go a biomechanical and gait assessment
to determine if you would benefit from prescription orthotics in your shoes. 
If you then wish to proceed you would have plaster of paris casts taken of your feet.
