What are Orthotics?
An Orthotic is an medical insole for the shoe.
Firstly a cast of your foot is made out of plaster of paris and then an insole is manufactured from the cast in a laboratory usually in the USA.
The insole is then only suitable for your feet. They are special because they are made specially for you unlike cheaper over the counter orthotics.
They can be made to suit various types of footwear including heeled shoes and sports shoes and can also be moved from one pair of similar shoes to another.
The orthotics (insoles) are then worn in your footwear to re-align the foot position, correcting and controlling foot and leg function. They take pressure off certain areas of the foot and increase comfort or stability since abnormal motion may be the underlying cause of foot, lower limb and back problems.
Prescription functional orthotics are hand finished, semi flexible, high quality. They optimize your foot mechanics and body alignment.
Feet provide the foundation for the whole body
What is a biomechanical and Gait Assessment?
Podiatrists are trained to analyze biomechanical and locomotor disorders which can affect posture and gait. Even a small structural or functional imbalance in the feet can cause problems in the:- feet, ankles, knees, hips, back, neck.
A biomechanical examination enables podiatrists to identify and treat functional faults. The biomechanical assessment includes the evaluation of abnormal foot structures and posture and gait, including examination of the feet, ankle, knees, hips and spinal joints.
The assessment enables the cause of the problem to be identified and then an attempt to correct the biomechanics in order to optimize performance and relieve you of pain. The most common treatment for a biomechanical problem is the use of orthotic insoles to realign the body.
